Rich old Barossa Shiraz, hand selected, with mulberry, tobacco, leather and light oak overtones. A big wine with long flavours and rewarding characters. Full of plummy fruit balanced by abundant soft tannins. Matured in a combination of French and American oak.

James Halliday awarded this wine 92 points: "Complex, long and lingering; gently spicy, savoury fruits swathed in sweet vanilla oak; typical Jim Irvine style (maker)"

The Vineyard and the Vigneron

Kies is proud to grow the fruit for their wine in the vineyard directly behind the Cellar Door. The bulk of the vines on the Estate, which include Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet and Semillon were planted in 1965, with several acres of Riesling planted in 1975.

Michael Kies has looked after the vineyard for 20 years and claims to know each vine individually. He has a great passion for ‘his vines', and can be found walking the vineyard every morning.

By managing the separate blocks within the vineyard and tending to varieties individually, outstanding fruit flavour is obtained – and natural fruit flavour is what Kies wine is all about. In fact Kies harvest their grapes using flavour as their guide to ripeness, and only rely on chemical analysis as a last resort.

The Winemakers

Dubbed “The Merlot King”, Jim Irvine helped make Kies wines for over 20 years. He was great friends with Ken Kies and has given not only Kies, but also the Australian wine industry over 50 years of exemplary service.

A changing of the guard now sees Jim’s daughter Joanne Irvine guiding the Kies portfolio. Recently recognised as the Red Winemaker of the Year at the 2006 International Wine Challenge, Jo works closely with Michael Kies to produce the perfect expressions of southern Barossa fruit.
